About Kirstie

Hi, I’m Kirstie Spadie, Artistic Director of the North Carolina Dance Institute. For as long as I can remember, dance has been my passion—and I’ve been lucky enough to turn that passion into a lifelong career filled with incredible experiences.
I earned my BFA from the University of North Carolina School of the Arts, which set the stage (quite literally!) for my work in professional productions like CATS, where I performed as Victoria, the White Cat, and in international and national tours of West Side Story. One of the highlights of my career has been restaging West Side Story using the original Jerome Robbins choreography—a truly special opportunity to bring such iconic work to life.

Along the way, I’ve also had the privilege of working with amazing organizations, including serving as the founding Artistic Director of North Carolina Arts in Action, an initiative appointed by Jacques d’Amboise of the National Dance Institute. My choreography has been showcased at events like the Carolina Arts Festival, Broadway Rocks, and the NC Special Olympics Ceremonies, and it’s been such a joy to see how dance can bring people together.

Through it all, my greatest passion has been teaching and inspiring others to embrace dance in their own way. For the past 25 years, I’ve taught thousands of dancers—from young beginners to seasoned performers—helping them discover the joy of movement, whether their goal is to refine their skills or simply have fun.

‘Dance is an expression that blends artistry and athleticism into a living, breathing, moving sculpture’

I especially love creating choreography for musical theatre and jazz and working on productions that make dance accessible to everyone. Co-directing with STAR (Special Theatre Arts Raleigh) has been one of the most rewarding parts of my career, with productions like The Little Mermaid, Charlotte’s Web, and Rock of Ages, earning the 2022 Raleigh Medal of Arts.

Dance isn’t just about steps and technique—it’s about connection, expression, and finding joy in movement. Whether you’re here to explore a new hobby or take your skills to the next level, I’m here to guide and support you on your dance journey. Let’s create something beautiful together!
